Sources of Slavic Folklore Chart III on pg. 615
1.Orthodox Christianity
2. Old Religion
3. Iranian Dualism

+No written records make it harder to document beliefs, oral traditions
+Can determine lifestyles of peoples from their beliefs and how they view nature
--->Foragers/Migratory (symbolized by a line _____)
--->Farmers/Settled-boarders (symbolized by a circle O)
--->Become farmers, make fences to keep animals in
Example: The wolf
--->Forager-wolf was a positive feature because it was a great hunter, an admirable trait for migratory tribe
--->Farmer-wolf was negative/ enemy because it hunted livestock

Beliefs and rituals depend on view of the Universe
+Three Tiered Universe
1)Heaven
2)Earth
3)Hell
-Plus spiritual connectors

-Humans have to understand the world around them, things like lightening, disease
-People observe chaos in nature through the 5 senses -> They seek order in this chaos. They use reasoning to find patterns. -> Interpret unknowns as cosmos and discover intangible and congruent (existing in the same plane) spirit world.
-Through this process, discover cycle of seasons. Know the pattern but uncertain of the timing (up to the gods), so create rituals to help the cycle along
-Observed life cycles and create rituals to mark the stages of life (birth -> adulthood -> marriage -> childbearing -> death)

+Spheres of Coping
Lecture 8 - Coping with Nature Spheres%2Bof%2Bcoping
-Magic is end-oriented. Some process to achieve something (ex. Dracula drinks blood, ritual magic, to become younger)
-Religion is process-oriented. Used to create values and validate cultures.
-Science- do experiments to test observation.

Definitions
Mythology- the spiritual culture of a people
Science- verified (by doing experiments) knowledge
Contact magic- utilize tangible object that had contact with subject
Similarity magic- utilize object with semblance to subject (voodoo doll)

+Analysis Outline for Magic Rituals Chart Vb. Vampire Lore
Analysis Outline Vampire Ritual
1. Primary Anxiety (fear threat) = Vampire Attacks
2. Primary Ritual (action to remove threat) = Apotropaics (precautionary measures, cross, garlic)
3. Secondary Anxiety (fear action failed) = Unexplained Death
4. Secondary Ritual (additional action) = Impaling (with spell “In nomine Patris et Filii et Spritu Sancti, te liberatio!”)
5. Rationalization (reasoning, may not be actual reason)= Removing the vampire threat
6. Symbolization = Anthropomorphization of death (also apotropaics)
7. Function = Remove anxiety caused by unexplained death

1) Why is science 'profane'?

2) What the heck is 'Anthropomorphization of death cause (also apotropaics)'?

Googled:
'Anthropomorphization' is attribution of human motivation, characteristics, or behavior to nonhuman organisms or inanimate objects.
'Apotropaic' is a word generally used to mean something that ward off demons and other evil spirits, but is often used to describe the various methods of stopping a vampire.

Any ideas, guys?
