Admin edit: For those who looked at lecture 6 before Thursday, please note that this was what I had in there originally but it was actually for McNally 156-183, so please look at Lecture 6: Novel to Stage to Screen again for the correct set of notes.
On stage, in fiction, and on film
Stage
After Stoker’s original novel Dracula it first made its appearance on stage then in fiction but where it really became famous was on film
First stage performance was too long described as “dreadful”
First appearance in America in 1927 (New York) where Balderston “revised” the script but in reality it was more of a rewrite. His rewrite enhanced the dramatic pacings
Novel /Fiction
Made it’s appearances in many different novel’s with different versions and
Getting Even – Comedy
In Search of Dracula – inspired combination of history with fiction
Something Had to Be Done – updated the vampire genre to Vietnam War
Saberhagen (Dracula Films, The Dracula Tapes with The Holmes-Dracula) was important because he initiated telling the story from Dracula’s point of view. He was also famous for portraying vampire as an attractive positive figure in some of his series.
Other versions start from different places and centuries and incorporate world events and Dracula
One of the most important vampire fictions since Stoker’s are Anne Rice’s fiction novels
Film
1931 Tod Browning decided to make own Dracula movie based on the Balderston-Deane rewrite . Made most money in 1931/ The Storyline differs though (172)
Brownings version was almost simultaneous to the release of Dracula .. During the Great Depression.
Summary
In summary this chapter just talks about different releases of Dracula on stage in fiction and in films. IT talks about the plot and differences from one to the next. In some we see Dracula as good in others we see him as evil. We sometimes have the vampires perspective. Some are comedies some are horror films. There are just different ways to present and approaches to telling the story. I couldn’t list everyone and all it’s details but major points and examples are included.
